The New York Jets have released backup quarterback Mark Brunell and waived cornerback Will Billingsley and guard Marlon Davis. The moves Friday came as the Jets were in intense negotiations to try to reach an agreement with free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Several other teams are interested in the player considered this year's top free agent.||||||| The 40-year-old Brunell came to the Jets last season and served as a mentor to Mark Sanchez. Brunell, a three-time Pro Bowl selection in 18 NFL seasons, played in two games for New York last season and threw for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

The Jets have signed Brunell, who backed up Drew Brees last season for the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, to a two-year contract.||||||| The move Wednesday had been expected for several months as New York sought an experienced quarterback to back up Mark Sanchez. The Jets couldn't sign Brunell until free agency restrictions were lifted last week. Brunell, 39, played the last two years in New Orleans and the previous four with Washington after nine years with Jacksonville. The three-time Pro Bowl selection spent his first two years as Brett Favre's backup in Green Bay.
