Although the Super Bowl champions have lost several key players during free agency, they've enhanced their defensive line by signing Chris Canty and Spears, who has 89 starts over his NFL career.

Spears injured his calf Sunday in the third quarter against Green Bay. The sixth-year veteran out of LSU had 24 tackles this season, including one for a loss.

Spears is expected to be out four to six weeks after getting hurt late in Thursday's second practice. Since the slight ligament tear won't require surgery, there is a chance Spears could be back for the Sept. 12 season opener at Washington.

Spears was one of the Cowboys' two first-round draft picks in 2005, the 20th overall. He started in 15 of 16 2009 games and made 50 tackles with 2 1/2 and 16 quarterback pressures.
Spears tore cartilage in his right knee in the first workout of training camp Saturday and will have arthroscopic surgery Sunday that will keep him out up to three weeks.|||||||
Spears, a first-round pick before last season, had the start of his career slowed by injuries to the same knee, right ankle and right calf during his first training camp. He still managed to break into the starting lineup midway the season, and is expected to hold down the left end of Dallas' 3-4 front again this season.
