Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus was excused Monday after he returned home to his native Alabama following the game. Dareus is back with his family to mourn the loss of his younger brother, who was shot and killed during a burglary in a suburb of Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 9.|||||||

Gailey added on Wednesday that Dareus plans to return in time to play in Buffalo's home-opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Dareus' younger brother, Simeon Gilmore, was one of three people shot and killed during a burglary in Pelham, Ala., on Sunday. Authorities said 20-year-old Jon Staggs Jr. has been charged with capital murder and burglary.

The injury occurred in practice Wednesday, during a portion that is closed to reporters. Dareus was briefly spotted walking on crutches in the locker room after practice. He was drafted third overall out of Alabama in April, and is being counted on to make an immediate impact in improving what was a porous defense last year.
