Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus was excused Monday after he returned home to his native Alabama following the game. Dareus is back with his family to mourn the loss of his younger brother, who was shot and killed during a burglary in a suburb of Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 9.||||||| Though it's unclear when Dareus will return to practice, he is expected to play Sunday.

Dareus has returned to practice after being excused to be with his family in Alabama to mourn the shooting death of his younger brother.||||||| Though absent in the locker room before practice, Dareus was on the field working out Thursday afternoon. That means he should be ready to play in the Bills' home-opener against Kansas City on Sunday.

Dareus has been excused to be with his family after his younger brother was one of three people shot and killed in a suburb of Birmingham, Ala., last weekend.||||||| Coach Chan Gailey expressed his condolences to Dareus and his family. Gailey added on Wednesday that Dareus plans to return in time to play in Buffalo's home-opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Dareus' younger brother, Simeon Gilmore, was one of three people shot and killed during a burglary in Pelham, Ala., on Sunday. Authorities said 20-year-old Jon Staggs Jr. has been charged with capital murder and burglary.

A person familiar with defensive lineman Marcell Dareus' ankle injury has told The Associated Press that the Buffalo Bills are awaiting tests to determine its severity after the rookie first-round draft pick was hurt in practice.||||||| The injury occurred in practice Wednesday, during a portion that is closed to reporters. Dareus was briefly spotted walking on crutches in the locker room after practice. He was drafted third overall out of Alabama in April, and is being counted on to make an immediate impact in improving what was a porous defense last year.

A person familiar with the deal said Friday that Dareus agreed to a four-year, $20.4 million contract.||||||| Selected third overall out of Alabama, Dareus signed about 90 minutes before the Bills were to take the field for conditioning in suburban Rochester. The first practice is Saturday.
