STATS, LLC PLAYER NEWS

The Buffalo Bills began addressing their needs at linebacker by signing free-agent Manny Lawson to a four-year contract. The Bills announced the move Wednesday, a day after the NFL's free agency period opened. A person familiar with the contract provided the length of the deal, and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Bills did not reveal the terms.||||||| Listed at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, Lawson played the past two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent his first five seasons with San Francisco, after the 49ers selected him in the first round in the draft. Lawson had 47 tackles and two sacks in 16 games, including 10 starts, last season. Overall, he has 18 sacks, two interceptions and seven forced fumbles in starting 81 of 96 career games.

Manny Lawson wants a new contract from the San Francisco 49ers. The outside linebacker showed up for a mandatory minicamp on Thursday after missing the 49ers voluntary workouts. He says he needed a change in scenery and that he is in the best shape of his life.||||||| Lawson started all 16 games last year for the first time in his career, leading the 49ers with a career-high 6.5 sacks. Since then, San Francisco has extended the contracts of other young players the team feels are key to its future. Lawson is in the final season of the five-year, $7.5 million deal he signed as the second of San Francisco's two first-round draft picks in 2006. His base salary of $630,000 pays him less than two of the team's other outside linebackers.

Lawson is in the final year of his contract with the 49ers and has yet to take part in the team's offseason program.||||||| No Lawson means more practice snaps for Ahmad Brooks, Travis LaBoy and increased time for Parys Haralson at left outside linebacker, where Lawson normally starts in San Francisco's 3-4 defensive set. "It's giving them an opportunity to get out there and get coached on the go," 49ers coach Mike Singletary said. "All of those young guys have really benefited, because they all wouldn't normally be getting as many reps as they are getting right now."

The 49ers put Lawson on injured reserve Friday, ending the linebacker's season two days after he tore a ligament in his left knee. San Francisco replaced Lawson on its 53-man roster by signing fullback Zak Keasey from the practice squad before Sunday's game at Pittsburgh.||||||| He was second on the team with 14 tackles during San Francisco's 2-0 start. Coach Mike Nolan hasn't announced who will replace Lawson in the 49ers' starting lineup.
Posted Sept. 20, 2007
Lawson will miss the rest of the San Francisco 49ers' season after tearing a ligament in his left knee.||||||| Lawson, a starting outside linebacker in the 49ers' 3-4 defensive scheme, went down with the injury during Wednesday's practice. The injury didn't initially appear to be serious, and Lawson rode on a stationary bike for the rest of the team's workout. But tests determined Thursday that Lawson tore his anterior cruciate ligament. Veteran Hannibal Navies and seldom-used second-year pro Parys Haralson are the top candidates to replace Lawson.
