The Saints have scratched middle linebacker Jon Vilma and free safety Malcolm Jenkins for Sunday's game against Carolina.|||||||
Jenkins emerged from last week's victory over Atlanta with a sore neck, but was able to practice on Thursday and Friday.
Jenkins has apparently hurt his right knee while tackling Tampa Bay running back LaGarrette Blount on the team's first defensive series Sunday. Blount had a 16-yard gain when he tried to go through Jenkins' tackle along the sideline.|||||||
Jenkins struggled to get up and then went back down while trainers examined him before finally walking off the field on his own. After Jenkins made his way to a table behind the bench, trainers wrapped up his knee. Jenkins then paced around flexing the knee, but did not return with Saints starters on the next defensive series as Darren Sharper stepped in for him. Saints officials did not immediately update Jenkins' condition.
Jenkins was fined $10,000 for two hits, one to the head area of Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman and one out of bounds.|||||||
The fine was announced Friday.
The Saints scratched Jenkins from their game Sunday at Miami because of his sore left ankle.|||||||
Jenkins, the Saints' top draft pick last spring, was not a starter, but has played in five- and six-defensive back sets. He also has stood out on special teams, forcing fumbles on kick coverage in each of the previous two games. Jenkins hurt his left ankle during the Saints' 27-7 win at Buffalo a week ago and did not practice all week.
Jenkins and the Saints agreed to terms Sunday night on a five year contract, opening the way for the former Ohio State standout to report to training camp. The team did not release financial terms.|||||||
Jenkins, the Saints' first-round draft pick at No. 14, has missed the first 10 days of camp, including the club's scrimmage on Saturday. Currently, Jenkins is slotted as a backup, with Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter the expected starters at corner. Jenkins started 45 games in a four-year career at Ohio State that earned him first-team All-America honors and the Jim Thorpe Award as a senior. He had 11 career interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.
