The Minnesota Vikings have released starting safety Madieu Williams as their official roster moves start to take shape.||||||| The Vikings announced the moves Thursday. Williams spent three seasons in Minnesota, but was largely a disappointment after signing a big-money deal to come over from Cincinnati in 2008. Williams had 75 total tackles and one interception last season. He was due to make $5.4 million this season. The Vikings are up against the salary cap and needed to cut Williams to save money.

Williams was active Sunday's game against Tampa Bay despite a shoulder injury that limited him in practice this week.||||||| Coach Brad Childress said Friday that Williams's shoulder condition is unrelated to the neck problem that kept him out of the first seven games of the season. Williams was hurt Wednesday when he fell hard on his shoulder during the special teams portion of practice, but apparently was healthy enough to play Sunday.
