Tomlinson has signed a one-day contract with the San Diego Chargers and announced his retirement after a brilliant 11-year NFL career. He was drafted in the first round by San Diego in 2001 and became one of the biggest stars in team history. Tomlinson was with the Chargers for nine seasons before playing the last two seasons with the New York Jets.||||||| Tomlinson, about to turn 33, says it's time to move on and enjoy his family. He says he's still physically capable of playing but that the game takes a mental toll. Tomlinson was voted NFL MVP in 2006, when he set league single-season records with 31 touchdowns, including 28 rushing, and 186 points. He finishes his career with 13,684 yards, fifth all-time, and 145 touchdowns.

Tomlinson, who was the NFL MVP in 2006 and is the fifth-leading rusher in league history, is retiring after 11 NFL seasons.||||||| The San Diego Chargers said Sunday that Tomlinson would re-sign with the team and announce his retirement. Tomlinson turns 33 on Saturday. Tomlinson was drafted in the first round by San Diego in 2001 and spent the first nine years of his career with the Chargers. He played the last two seasons with the Jets.

Tomlinson has told a San Diego radio station that he is considering calling an end to his 11-year NFL career.||||||| The 32-year-old Tomlinson told the Scott & BR Show on XX1090AM on Friday that he is "contemplating retirement." The running back said he had told his agent and coaches of his position, saying that chasing a championship would be his main motivation to return. Tomlinson, a likely Hall of Famer, finished the season with 280 yards rushing and 449 yards receiving and three touchdowns in his second season with the Jets.

Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson says Sunday's game at Miami could possibly be the last of his career if New York does not make the playoffs. Tomlinson enters the regular-season finale needing 35 yards rushing to pass Jerome Bettis for fifth on the NFL's career list. He says if he plays, "it doesn't have to be here," but adds that he wouldn't want to play for a non-playoff contender.||||||| Tomlinson, set to become a free agent, says Thursday that he will "wait and see" before deciding on whether to continue playing beyond this season, adding that he'll retire if the situation isn't right. When asked if he would hypothetically accept the veterans' minimum salary to return to the Jets, Tomlinson smiled and said, "I've got kids, man."

Tomlinson left Sunday's 34-19 win at Washington briefly with a left knee injury when he slipped on the sideline after a tackle, but coach Rex Ryan expects him to be fine.||||||| Tomlinson has rushed for just 172 yards in 10 games. He has one rushing TD.
