Faulk has made it official. After two injury-plagued seasons, the running back is retiring after 13 years with the New England Patriots.||||||| The team's career leader in all-purpose yards formally announced his retirement on Tuesday at the team's Hall of Fame.Drafted out of LSU in the second round in 1999, Faulk spent his entire career with the Patriots, primarily as a third-down back and kick returner. He was part of all three New England championship teams but was not active for last season's 21-17 Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants.

Faulk is retiring after 13 seasons with the New England Patriots, and the formal announcement is scheduled for Tuesday.||||||| Faulk, who appeared in just nine games the past two seasons, wasn't active for the Super Bowl in February and hasn't been with the team since. He missed all but two games in 2010 with a knee injury and began the 2011 season on the physically unable to perform list before playing in seven games. Faulk spent his entire NFL career with the Patriots, who drafted him in the second round out of LSU in 1999. He's the franchise leader in all-purpose and return yards.

Faulk says he'll miss the rest of the Patriots' season with a torn knee ligament.||||||| Faulk said Wednesday that he will undergo surgery for the injury to his right knee. He hurt his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's 28-14 loss at the New York Jets. Faulk is an offensive captain and the longest-tenured player on the Patriots. He has been a valuable player as a passing threat, blocker and runner. He also has been an outstanding punt returner.

Faulk didn't want to go out like Nomar Garciaparra. Watching the former All-Star Boston Red Sox shortstop retire on Wednesday helped convince Faulk that he wanted to spend his entire career with the Patriots. Faulk re-signed with the team that made him a second-round draft choice in 1999.||||||| Faulk is the longest-tenured member of the Patriots. Along with Tom Brady, Matt Light and Stephen Neal, Faulk was a member of all three Patriots Super Bowl-winning teams. The 33-year-old Faulk ran for 335 yards and caught 37 passes for 301 yards and scored three touchdowns last season.
