The Panthers waived Balmer a week after claiming the defensive tackle off waivers from Seattle.||||||| Balmer, a former first-round pick out of North Carolina, was claimed by the Panthers on Aug. 25 to replace Ron Edwards. He was placed on injured reserve after tearing his triceps last month. He started 11 games last season for Seattle but didn't play in any preseason games this year with Carolina.

The Seattle Seahawks have released Balmer.||||||| The former first-round pick of the 49ers struggled to find a role that fit in Seattle's defense. Balmer was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers for a sixth-round draft pick last August and appeared in all 16 games for Seattle in 2010. Balmer started 11 games between defensive tackle and defensive end for the Seahawks after injuries forced him into an increased role. He finished the year with a career-high 43 tackles.

Balmer was traded to the Seahawks on Monday after a mysterious absence from the 49ers over the past week. Both teams confirmed the swap Monday and the Seahawks say they will send an undisclosed 2011 draft pick to the Niners. Balmer left the 49ers last Monday for what coach Mike Singletary called personal reasons.||||||| Balmer, the team's first-round draft pick in 2008 out of North Carolina, missed his fifth straight practice Friday before the team traveled to Indianapolis for its exhibition opener against the Colts. Balmer's absences had been unexcused since Wednesday. Balmer met Wednesday night with Singletary, but still was a no-show at training camp. The 23-year-old Balmer is entering the third year of an $8 million, five-year deal he signed as a rookie. He has yet to start a game.

Balmer missed his fourth straight day of training camp Thursday and his absence is still considered unexcused. The team said the defensive lineman met Wednesday night with coach Mike Singletary.||||||| Singletary allowed Balmer to miss Monday and Tuesday workouts as he dealt with a "personal issue." But the 49ers had expected him back Wednesday. Balmer, San Francisco's first-round draft pick in 2008 out of North Carolina, is entering the third year of the five-year, $8 million deal he signed as a rookie. He has yet to start a game and recorded no sacks in his first two NFL seasons.

Balmer was placed on injured reserve with a torn right labrum, ending his season.||||||| Balmer didn't have much fantasy value this season. The former first-round draft pick had 12 tackles in 11 games and has not made a start in two years.
