The 33-year-old McCown finished the last two years with the Bears, joining them each season in November after starter Jay Cutler was injured. In 10 NFL seasons with Arizona, Detroit, Oakland, Carolina and Chicago, he has started 33 of 50 games and completed 645 passes for 6,998 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Cutler sat out the second half of Sunday's loss to Houston with a concussion. Jason Campbell took over and is expected to start Monday at San Francisco if Cutler can't go. But the Bears needed a backup. McCown appeared in three games with Chicago last season and made two starts, completing 35 of 55 passes for 414 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

McCown was coaching quarterbacks at a North Carolina high school and hadn't taken an NFL snap since 2009 when the Bears signed him last November. McCown spent eight seasons in the NFL, including the first four with the Arizona Cardinals. He also played for Detroit, Oakland and Carolina.
