The Vikings signed Carlson as a free agent to pair him with Kyle Rudolph in their two-tight end sets for a boost to their passing game, but he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee on July 31 and hasn't practiced since. Carlson missed the 2011 season after tearing the labrum in his left shoulder.

The 27-year-old Carlson spent his first four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. But he missed all of last season after needing shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum that occurred in training camp. ESPN first reported the agreement, which includes $11 million in guaranteed money. Carlson grew up in Litchfield, about a 90-minute drive west of Minneapolis.
