A person with knowledge of the negotiations says the Cleveland Browns have reached agreement with Pro Bowl offensive tackle Joe Thomas on a long-term contract extension.|||||||
Thomas has made the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons and is regarded as one of the NFL's best left tackles.
Thomas was added Tuesday to the AFC Pro Bowl roster, replacing Jason Peters of the Buffalo Bills.|||||||
Thomas, the third overall selection in last year's draft, started all 16 games for the Browns and was part of an offensive line that allowed only 19 sacks, the third-fewest in franchise history.
Thomas agreed to terms on a six-year contract with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, ensuring the No. 3 overall pick will be at the opening of training camp.|||||||
Rated as the top lineman in April's draft, and one of the most polished to come out of college in the past few years, Thomas will compete with incumbent Kevin Shaffer for the starting job at left tackle.
Thomas is nearing a deal and his agent is hopeful the offensive tackle will be signed by the start of training camp Friday.|||||||
The Browns are anticipating that Thomas will make an immediate impact at left tackle on the team's inconsistent and injury-filled offensive line. Thomas' contract talks were expected to be tricky because the third pick in the past three drafts has been a position player - wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald, Braylon Edwards and quarterback Vince Young - and the Browns are reluctant to give a tackle $15 million or more in guaranteed money.
