Staley will stick around during the bye week and continue to work to regain strength - and get back over 300 pounds - after being limited in practice ahead of the Arizona game because of illness.|||||||
He played against the Cardinals, but got out of breath, used an inhaler for the first time, and had oxygen on the sidelines. "I was getting pretty tired as far as out of breath. It was harder for me to catch my wind," Staley said.
After surrendering a staggering 18 sacks in the past three games, the 49ers are facing the prospect of playing without left tackle Joe Staley for the Monday night matchup against the Steelers at Candlestick Park.|||||||
The blindside blocker is still recovering from a concussion and hasn't participated in practice this week. Alex Boone would make his first career start for the NFC West champions if Staley is not cleared to play.

Staley has agreed to a six-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers that will keep him with the club through 2017. A first-round pick in 2007, Staley started every game at right tackle as a rookie before moving to the other end of the line last year to replace the injury-prone Jonas Jennings.|||||||
