A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Monday that Mays is likely out for the season after suffering a serious injury to his lower left leg in the Denver Broncos' 34-14 win over the New Orleans Saints.||||||| The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because coach John Fox hadn't yet addressed the media Monday. The Denver Post first reported the extent of Mays' injury.

Mays says he's not going to change his style after getting suspended a game for a hit that sent Houston quarterback Matt Schaub's helmet and a piece of his ear flying.||||||| Mays was also fined $50,000 but got to keep his $200,000-plus game check. He immediately apologized to Schaub for the hit during the Texans' 31-25 win at Denver on Sept. 23, which Mays called unintentional. Schaub accepted his apology.

Denver coach John Fox says the NFL has denied Broncos linebacker Joe Mays' appeal and he will miss Sunday's game against the Raiders.||||||| Mays was fined $50,000 and suspended for one game for his hit on Texans quarterback Matt Schaub last Sunday that sent Schaub's helmet flying and took off a chunk of his left ear. Mays remains barred from the team's facilities until next Monday.

Mays was excited to get a three-year, $12 million deal to stay in Denver. After hearing Peyton Manning had chosen the Broncos over other suitors Monday, he was even more thrilled.||||||| Mays has started 17 games since arriving in Denver from Philadelphia in 2010. He had 75 tackles and 12 starts last season, playing mostly on early downs. He had visited with the New Orleans Saints and was on his way to talk with the Colts on Sunday, when the Broncos agreed to the three-year contract.

The Denver Broncos have placed Mays on injured reserve.||||||| Mays blew out his left knee in the Broncos' 10-6 loss at Kansas City on Sunday. Mays said he sprained a ligament and didn't need surgery, but because the recovery is four weeks, his season is over.
