Backus, who's started 160 straight games, suffered a partially torn chest muscle during the offseason and spent the first three weeks of training camp on the active/non-football injury list. It's not clear whether he'll play in Saturday's exhibition game against visiting New England.
Backus, who has started all 99 games at offensive left tackle since he was drafted in 2001, told the Detroit Free Press he hopes to know by the end of the week if he'll play Sunday.|||||||
Backus strained an intercostal muscle in his rib cage warming up fro Sunday's game against Philadelphia and left the game in the third quarter.
Backus agreed to terms on a six-year deal with the Lions and is expected to sign the contract Friday. The Lions and Backus agreed to a one-year offer in May after they designated him the team's franchise player, but both sides kept working on a new deal that would keep him in Detroit for years to come.|||||||
