Smith, whose acquisition was announced by the Saints on Thursday, has spent four seasons in the NFL, playing in 45 games with 26 starts at both left and right tackle. The 6-foot-5, 308-pound lineman was the second overall pick out of Baylor in the 2009 draft by the St. Louis Rams and spent last season with the New York Jets.

Smith was the No. 2 overall pick by the Rams in the 2009 draft, but failed to live up to lofty expectations. Barry Richardson has started at right tackle all preseason ahead of Smith, who has been plagued by concussion problems throughout his career.

The concussion is the second in two NFL seasons for Smith, who was the second overall pick in the 2009 draft. Smith bounced back a lot quicker from the latest concussion than he did in his his rookie season, when he missed the final six games. Smith was injured in practice before the Rams' 20-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 31. He says that during the bye week, he went home and rested.
