Panthers cut P Baker
The Panthers have released P Jason Baker in an effort to create more salary cap space and improve the position.

The Panthers signed Baker to a five-year, $8.5 million extension Monday that makes him one of the NFL's highest-paid punters.|||||||
Baker, who was waived six times by four teams early in his career, set team records for net average the past two seasons, 38.9 yards in 2005 and 39 last season. Baker had a 45.7-yard gross average last season in 98 punts, the second most in team history.
Baker re-signed with Carolina on Tuesday after setting a team record last season with a 38.9 punting average. The punter signed a two-year deal worth $1.8 million, along with a $400,000 signing bonus. The Panthers acquired Baker from the Broncos in a swap of punters last offseason, when they sent Todd Sauerbrun to Denver.|||||||
The Denver Broncos have traded Baker and a seventh-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for three-time Pro Bowl punter Todd Sauerbrun. In 51 career games, Baker has averaged 39.6 yards on 228 punts.|||||||
Baker will compete with Steve Cheek and Tom Rouen for the Panthers' punting job next season.
