The Dolphins on Wednesday released Allen, a former first-round pick.||||||| Allen, the 16th overall pick in 2006, has struggled to shake the label of draft bust. He won a starting job in training camp this season but was replaced last week by Sean Smith. Allen started 19 games in his five seasons with Miami.

Allen signed a six-year contract with the Miami Dolphins on Monday, reportedly between $8 million and $9 million. The 16th overall selection in the 2006 NFL draft will compete for a starting safety job after playing cornerback for Tennessee.||||||| Allen had his first day of practice with the Dolphins on Tuesday after signing his contract. He led the Southeastern Conferenec with 123 tackles in 2004 to become the first non-linebacker in at least 35 years to lead that category. He worked out daily during his hold-out to prepare himself for preseason.
