The Texans (8-3) signed the 36-year-old Delhomme on Tuesday, after Matt Leinart broke his left collarbone in Sunday's 20-13 win at Jacksonville. Leinart had his scheduled surgery moved from Thursday to next Tuesday because he has an illness.

Delhomme worked out with the Texans on Tuesday, along with another retired quarterback, Jeff Garcia. Delhomme will back up rookie T.J. Yates, a fifth-round pick who will start Sunday's game against Atlanta. Rick Smith, Delhomme's agent, said the 36-year-old Delhomme has been staying in shape and working with racehorses in Louisiana since he was cut by Cleveland in July.

The 36-year-old quarterback didn't play much in 2010 after the Browns signed him following his release by Carolina. He helped develop Colt McCoy, then a rookie who became Cleveland's starter. Delhomme completed 93 of 149 for 872 yards, with two touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was 2-2 as a starter. Delhomme was scheduled to make $5.4 million in base salary.
