Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew says in a statement Monday that Best will not be permitted to return at this time, but the running back will continue to work with the team's medical and training staffs in the hope that he'll be cleared to play at some point. Best hasn't played since last October because of concussion problems.
Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best still hasn't been cleared for full contact - a fact he attributes to the new NFL protocol for dealing with concussions. The Lions opened practice Friday, and Best was put on the active physically unable to perform list.|||||||
Best missed over half of last season after a concussion against San Francisco on Oct. 16. He also had concussion problems last preseason and when he was a college player at California.
Best is going on season-ending injured reserve. The second-year running back has been bothered by concussion problems and hasn't played since Oct. 16, when the Lions lost to San Francisco. After starting 5-0, Detroit has lost four of six, beginning with that game against the 49ers. The team says the move is expected to become official next week.|||||||
Best also missed time during this preseason because of a concussion, and when he was a college player at California, he missed a few games after a fall knocked him out and sent him to the hospital with a concussion and sore back. Lions coach Jim Schwartz says the team has followed medical protocol with Best's injury and looks forward to "his continued improvement and eventual return to the field."

Best is out with a concussion suffered in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the 49ers. Maurice Morris will be the Lions' primary back. Best had dealt with concussions before, but Detroit still expects him to play again this season.
