The rookie was pulled away from a tussle with some Titans players by back judge Steve Freeman in the second quarter, when he pushed Freeman aside. Smith apologized after the game for what he called an "unacceptable" action and for even trying to return to the scrum in the first place. The Vikings won 30-7.

Several Titans and Vikings tangled in the second quarter after Minnesota's Antoine Winfield intercepted a pass from Matt Hasselbeck. The hard-nosed Smith was right in the middle of the confrontation, and an official stepped in to try to steer him out of the area. Smith was drafted out of Notre Dame to add some playmaking and a harder edge to the back end of the defense. The Vikings have been searching for an intimidating presence at that position for years, and Smith gained a reputation for being willing to get physical even against teammates in practice during training camp while competing for a starting job.
