Sims had the appendectomy Sunday night. Sims is hoping to revive his career with the Colts by competing for the vacant starting job at weak side linebacker. That position opened up when last year's starter, Clint Session, signed with Jacksonville. Caldwell did not specify when Sims could return.

For the Colts, this represents a signing frenzy. On Monday night, they picked up defensive lineman Jamaal Anderson, Atlanta's first-round pick in 2007. Sims was Detroit's first-round pick in 2006. Indy has only one other unrestricted free agent on the roster, kicker Adam Vinatieri. The 6-foot, 230-pound Sims seems to fit a Colts system that prefers speed to size. He has 475 career tackles and 4.5 sacks in five seasons, the first four in Detroit.
Sims on Thursday called his $50,000 fine by the NFL "outrageous," and said he planned to appeal.|||||||
Sims, a five-year veteran, was docked Wednesday for a hit on Tennessee wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins in the second quarter of the Eagles' 37-19 loss to the Titans on Oct. 24. According to a league statement, Sims was guilty of "unnecessarily striking a defenseless receiver in the neck and head area with his forearms."

It's the first large fine handed out by the NFL since it sent a video to the 32 teams emphasizing what hits would bring big fines and possible suspensions. Sims is a repeat offender, having been fined twice for unnecessary roughness, on Dec. 28, 2008 and on Sept. 13, 2009, both while with the Detroit Lions.
