Thomas has abruptly retired.|||||||
Thomas left the Chicago Bears on Sunday and later announced his retirement. The former Washington Redskins and New York Giants player offered no immediate explanation, saying on Twitter, "I have decided to retire from the NFL." A 2008 second-round draft pick by the Washington Redskins, he was cut in 2010 and made three catches last season with the Giants. He had 43 career receptions for 482 yards and three touchdowns and averaged 24.1 yards per kick return.
The New York Giants have been awarded receiver Devin Thomas on waivers from the Carolina Panthers.|||||||
A former second-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins, Thomas is the second receiver signed by the Giants this week. They signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Michael Clayton on Tuesday, a day after leading receiver Hakeem Nicks had an emergency procedure to relieve pressure in his right leg. Thomas appeared in five games with Washington and Carolina this season and did not have a catch. He returned 15 kickoffs with a 26.6-yard average.
Carolina has made another attempt to boost the NFL's worst offense by claiming Thomas off waivers from Washington. Washington waived him on Saturday.|||||||
Thomas did not catch a pass with Washington this season and has no immediate fantasy impact.
The Washington Redskins on Saturday released Thomas, a 2008 second-round draft pick who failed to impress new coach Mike Shanahan.|||||||
Thomas was one of three pass-catchers taken in the second round two years ago in what has turned out to be an extremely disappointing draft by then-front office head Vinny Cerrato. Thomas had trouble running routes correctly and was dogged by questions about work ethic, receiver Malcolm Kelly hasn't been able to stay healthy and is on injured reserve, and tight end Fred Davis is stuck behind Chris Cooley.
Thomas, the Redskins' top draft pick, has been carted away from practice after pulling his right hamstring at training camp. Coach Jim Zorn says the team doesn't immediately know the extent of the injury.|||||||
Thomas was hurt Thursday while reaching over his head to catch a pass from quarterback Jason Campbell during 11-on-11 drills. Thomas was drafted in the second round, 34th overall, and signed a $4.83 million, four-year contract last week.
