Schouman was injured Thursday during Buffalo's 34-21 preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts. The extent of Schouman's injury was announced a day after fellow tight end Shawn Nelson was suspended by the NFL for four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. With Michael Matthews and Jonathan Stupar the only healthy tight ends on the roster, general manager Buddy Nix is exploring all options at the position, coach Chan Gailey said.

Schouman, who's been limited by injuries for part of training camp, was hurt early in the second quarter on a play in which quarterback Trent Edwards scrambled for 3 yards. It's unclear which knee Schouman hurt. It's the latest setback for Schouman, who finished last season on injured reserve after hurting his right knee in Week 2.

Schouman opened last year as the Bills starter before a knee injury ended his season in Week 2, during a 33-20 win over Tampa Bay. He finished with nine catches for 103 yards. Buffalo took Schouman in the seventh round of the 2007 draft out of Boise State. He has 27 catches for 275 yards and a touchdown in 21 games, including 15 starts.
