The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed on a two-year contract with quarterback Dennis Dixon, who spent the past season with the Super Bowl-champion Baltimore Ravens on their practice squad. The move, announced Thursday, comes three days after the Eagles restructured Michael Vick's contract, bringing him back to compete with Nick Foles for the starting job.|||||||
The 28-year-old Dixon had a standout career at Oregon when Chip Kelly was Ducks offensive coordinator. Kelly replaced Andy Reid as Eagles coach after leading Oregon to a 46-7 mark the past four years. A fifth-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2008, Dixon has started three NFL games in five seasons. He has 402 yards passing and one touchdown on 35 for 49 passing. He's also rushed for 56 yards and one score.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed quarterback Dennis Dixon on the injured reserve list with a meniscus tear in his left knee, ending his season.|||||||
Dixon started the Steelers' first two games in place of the suspended Ben Roethlisberger. He was injured on a run during the first quarter of a 19-11 victory at Tennessee on Sept. 19. Charlie Batch took over and Dixon had surgery later in the week.
Dixon will be Pittsburgh's starting quarterback Sunday at Tennessee, even though the injured Byron Leftwich may return to practice as early as Wednesday. Until Leftwich injured a left knee ligament during the final exhibition game Sept. 2, Leftwich was expected to start throughout Ben Roethlisberger's four-game suspension.|||||||
Dixon completed 18 of 26 passes for 236 yards and an interception in his second NFL start, shaking off a series of underthrown passes early in the game to become more accurate in the second half. Even if, coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday, "I'd like the throws to be more on target."
Dixon will get his first extensive playing time with the starters in the Steelers' next-to-last preseason game Sunday in Denver and could follow Ben Roethlisberger.|||||||
Dixon has started only one NFL game, and he is expected to be Byron Leftwich's backup when the season starts and Roethlisberger is suspended. However, Tomlin said Dixon has played well enough to earn some time with the starters.
Two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger was suspended for six games without pay Wednesday for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy and ordered to undergo behavioral evaluation. The news could affect Dixon.|||||||
Dixon started a game last season with Roethlisberger sidelined with a concussion. He could be under center to begin the season against Atlanta.
