The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with linebacker Demorrio Williams, who was released by the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this week.||||||| The 31-year-old Williams played in 12 games last season for Kansas City as a reserve linebacker and on special teams. He is expected to give the Chargers some depth at inside linebacker behind returning starters Takeo Spikes and Donald Butler. Williams, an eight-year veteran, started 13 games and recorded 117 tackles for the Chiefs in 2009 but played behind Derrick Johnson the last two seasons.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released Williams, who had become a backup in recent seasons. The team announced the move Tuesday, one week before free agency begins.||||||| Williams joined the Chiefs in 2008 and had 22 starts in four seasons. He spent the previous four years with the Atlanta Falcons. Williams made 237 tackles (155 solo) as a Chief and frequently played on special teams.

Williams will likely miss the final two Kansas City Chiefs preseason games with a broken bone in his right hand, but expects to be ready for the Sept. 7 opener at New England.||||||| Williams, a free agent who signed a five-year contract in March, suffered the injury in practice Tuesday, but did not learn of the severity until a cast was placed on the hand later. From what doctors told him, Williams said, he'll miss Saturday's game at Miami and probably the Aug. 28 preseason game with St. Louis.

The Chiefs signed Williams to a five-year contract on Monday, a move that could knock Napoleon Harris out of the starting lineup.||||||| The 27-year-old Williams played four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, starting the past three at outside linebacker. He will likely be a starter on the outside in Kansas City, with Edwards moving to middle linebacker and Harris dropping to a backup role. Williams started every game last season after tearing a pectoral muscle in the offseason, getting 78 tackles and two interceptions.
