The Browns signed Nelson to a one-year contract Monday.|||||||
Nelson, who played three seasons for Buffalo, is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in last season's opener. The 6-foot-5, 214-pounder started 17 games for the Bills, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Nelson had 94 catches for 1,042 yards and eight touchdowns with the Bills. In 2011, he was second on the club in catches (61) and receiving yards (658). He also had five TDs.
Nelson is preparing to become a free agent after the Buffalo Bills informed the third-year player they will not extend him a contract offer to retain his rights. General manager Buddy Nix says he informed Nelson's agent of the decision Sunday. The Bills reached a similar decision with receiver Donald Jones earlier this month.|||||||
The move wasn't entirely a surprise for Nelson, who anticipated the possibility after the Bills fired coach Chan Gailey. Doug Marrone was hired to take over last month. An undrafted free agent out of Florida, Nelson was a dependable contributor during his first two years, with a combined 92 catches for 1,011 yards and eight touchdowns. Last year, he never made it past the season opener, when he tore a right knee ligament.
Nelson was placed on injured reserve this week.|||||||
Nelson will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his right knee during Buffalo's 48-28 loss at the New York Jets in the opener.
A person familiar with Buffalo Bills receiver David Nelson's injury says the player has a torn ligament in his right knee and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Nelson was hurt early into the fourth quarter of Sunday's 48-24 loss to the New York Jets when he went down away from the play. After being helped off the field, he was spotted walking on the injured leg along the sideline.|||||||
The person provided the update on Monday after Nelson had tests Monday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the team has not provided an update. The third year player had become a favorite target of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick last season, when he finished second on the team with 61 catches for 658 yards and five touchdowns.
Nelson and center Eric Wood are among the regulars who have been ruled out by coach Chan Gailey from playing in the team's preseason opener against the Washington Redskins on Thursday.|||||||
Nelson was limited to participating in individual drills on Monday in his first practice since spraining his right knee on July 28, three days into training camp.
