The 35-year-old veteran, who signed as a free agent Monday with the Jets, says Tuesday that he is healthy after dealing with back and knee injuries that sidelined him the last few seasons. Garrard was in training camp with Miami last summer and appeared to have a chance at the starting job, but a knee injury ended those hopes.

Garrard has not played in the NFL since 2010. Garrard started 76 games in nine seasons with Jacksonville. He played in the 2009 Pro Bowl. The Jets have been seeking a veteran to play behind Sanchez, who comes off the worst season of his four-year NFL career. They soured on Tim Tebow last season and Tebow barely played.
Garrard has been released by the Miami Dolphins, leaving Matt Moore as the veteran backup to rookie starter Ryan Tannehill.|||||||
Garrard signed in March and climbed atop the depth chart in training camp before he was sidelined by a left knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery Aug. 11. In his absence, Tannehill claimed the starting job for Sunday's opener at Houston.

The recovery timetable likely takes Garrard out of the competition to win the starting job for the season opener in four weeks. Garrard's knee had been bothering him for a few days, and following an examination he decided to undergo surgery rather than deal with the issue throughout the season, said his agent, Al Irby.
Garrard is listed as the first-team quarterback on the Miami Dolphins' first depth chart, ahead of Matt Moore and first-round pick Ryan Tannehill as they try to win the starting job.|||||||
Garrard, the longtime Jacksonville starter who sat out last season and underwent back surgery, has outplayed Moore in practice and also in Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage. Garrard declined last week to address speculation he might be ahead in the race. "I just come out and go to work every day," Garrard said after the scrimmage. "Until I'm told anything, I'm just going to keep working. I haven't been told anything."
