Goldson signed a $41.25 million, five-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday.|||||||
Goldson spent the past two seasons on one-year contracts with the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, including last year with the franchise tag for $6.2 million. Goldson made it clear he sought a long-term deal for his future security, and he got it across the country with the Bucs. The 28-year-old Goldson had 69 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble for San Francisco last year in his sixth NFL season.
Goldson has signed his $6.2 million franchise tender and reported to the San Francisco 49ers' training camp on time.|||||||
The signing announced Thursday settles the team's only outstanding contract issue on the day veterans were due to arrive. Goldson had wanted a long-term deal but never gave any indication that he wouldn't report to camp after the July 16 deadline for franchise tagged players to agree to a new contract passed.
The San Francisco 49ers used the franchise tag for Goldson on Friday, giving them the right to match any offer Goldson receives from elsewhere.|||||||
The move by the NFC West champions makes sure the team is compensated if Goldson - who had been set to become an unrestricted free agent March 13 - signs with another franchise. "There are no immediate plans to sign the franchise tag," Goldson's representative, Ben Dogra of CAA Sports, said in a text message. "We will continue to speak with the 49ers."
Goldson has been fined $25,000 by the NFL for punching Arizona receiver Early Doucet in last Sunday's game.|||||||
Doucet was fined $10,000 for unnecessary roughness when he struck Goldson in the helmet area. Goldson then threw his punches. At the end of a play early in the fourth quarter, Goldson was down away from the ball when he got blindsided and slapped on the back of the helmet by Doucet. Goldson jumped up, confronted him and both began swinging. Goldson then threw a series of punches to Doucet's facemask and received a 15-yard personal foul penalty before being ejected.
Goldson insists his fight with Arizona wide receiver Early Doucet was a one-time transgression and said he addressed his teammates and coaches after Sunday's 23-7 win over the Cardinals regarding the mistake.|||||||
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says the league doesn't plan to suspend Goldson, who will get word on a potential fine when they are handed down Friday.
