The 6-foot Manning, a 28-year-old native of nearby Corsicana, started all 16 games for Chicago last season, and also returns kickoffs, another need for the Texans.

Manning has started 40 of 61 games played during his four seasons with the Bears. he has six interceptions, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. A valuable special teams contributor, Manning has 11 kickoff returns for 40 or more yards over the past two seasons, which leads the NFL. He averaged a league-high 29.7 yards per kickoff return (1,070 yards on 36 returns) in 2008.
Manning told reporters he has been told he will start Sunday's home opener against the Steelers after coming back from a hamstring injury. Last week, Kevin Payne started at free safety.|||||||
Manning had a pulled hamstring through much of training camp and preseason but played nickel back against Green Bay. Although he's healthy enough to resume his old starting job, Manning expects to be tested by the Steelers. "I'm quite sure they're going to throw deep a lot, especially me coming back from a hammy injury they're going to try to go deep," Manning said.
Manning was inactive for Sunday's game because of an injured hamstring.|||||||
