The St. Louis Rams and free agent cornerback Cortland Finnegan have agreed to terms on a contract.|||||||
The 28-year-old Finnegan has played all six NFL seasons with Tennessee, the first five under Jeff Fisher. Finnegan was undergoing a physical and Fisher, the Rams' new coach, planned for a 10 a.m. CDT news conference Thursday to introduce the player. Finnegan was an All-Pro in 2008 and is known for his physical style. He got into a punching match with Texans star receiver Andre Johnson during a game in 2010 and both were fined $25,000.
Finnegan has apologized to his bosses, teammates, fans and even the media for bolting training camp. He also says he left because he was upset over talks for an extension, not the personal issue he mentioned defending himself on Twitter.|||||||
Finnegan said Monday after practice he understands he was a distraction to his team that wasn't needed. He says he let emotions get the best of him when he wanted to meet with his wife and discuss contract talks that he hopes will allow him to retire with Tennessee. The cornerback reported back for camp before curfew Sunday night, and he talked with new coach Mike Munchak on Monday. He will be fined.
Finnegan missed a mandatory team meeting on Saturday. His absence was confirmed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the meeting. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not commented on Finnegan's status.|||||||
Yahoo! Sports reports that Finnegan walked out of training camp Friday night, upset about his contract. He is to make $3.7 million this season, the last year of a contract extension he signed in 2008. Finnegan was a seventh-round draft pick in 2006 out of Samford. He quickly became a starting cornerback and was an All Pro in 2008.
Houston receiver Andre Johnson and Finnegan were involved in a fistfight that got both players ejected in the fourth quarter Sunday.|||||||
Finnegan hit Johnson in the mouth at the line of scrimmage and Johnson ripped off Finnegan's helmet. Johnson threw him to the ground as his helmet came off and them punched Finnegan at least twice in the head and face. The two had been pushing and jawing earlier in the game, and Johnson has called Finnegan's antics annoying in the past.
The NFL has fined Finnegan $10,000 for unnecessary roughness in last Sunday's loss to Denver. Finnegan hit Broncos guard Chris Kuper after Kuper's helmet was off. The league warned Finnegan that similar infractions in the future can lead to increased discipline.|||||||
Denver QB Kyle Orton said, "When we've got Chris Kuper with his helmet off, getting punched, it's ridiculous. If that's the type of player Cortland Finnegan wants to be, well then he's a cheap player, he's not a good player."
