The Chicago Bears have terminated offensive lineman Chris Williams' contract, ending a disappointing run for the former first-round draft pick. He came into training camp this year competing with J'Marcus Webb for the starting spot at left tackle but was unable to beat him out. And when the Bears signed journeyman Jonathan Scott last month, Williams' days appeared to be numbered.|||||||
Williams never lived up to his billing after being taken out of Vanderbilt with the 14th overall pick in 2008. He started 20 games at left guard, 11 at right tackle and seven at left tackle but never could settle into a position thanks to injuries and poor play.
Williams is done for the season with a wrist injury suffered versus Detroit.|||||||
A bust at tackle, Williams has played well at guard and will be missed on Chicago's improved offensive line.
Williams and rookie backup free safety Major Wright both left the game at Dallas with hamstring injuries.|||||||
Williams and Wright were both hurt in the first quarter Sunday, and the Bears said they would not return. The Bears lost Williams after only two drives, after quarterback Jay Cutler had already been sacked. Cutler was sacked on the second play of the game.
Williams, who returned to practice this week, remains inactive after undergoing back surgery in August. He didn't play in Sunday's 24-20 home win over the Eagles.|||||||
Williams practiced on a limited basis for the first time since surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back in early August. He is still several weeks away from returning, but this is a step in the right direction for the Bears' first-round draft pick.
