Rainey, a fifth-round draft pick in 2012, was arrested in January and charged with one count of simple battery. The incident cost him his job with the Steelers, who waived the rookie a few hours after the news broke. He eventually pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct.|||||||
Rainey was back in Gainesville on Tuesday, watching former Florida teammates take part in Pro Day. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin were on hand for the workouts, but it was unclear whether Rainey spoke with them.
The Steelers cut the troubled 24-year-old following his arrest on a battery charge in Gainesville, Fla., on Thursday, the latest in a series of off-the-field incidents that have threatened his career. The 24-year-old fifth-round draft pick played in all 16 games for the Steelers, mostly returning kicks. He returned 39 kickoffs for 1,035 yards.|||||||
Gainesville police officers charged Rainey with a single count of misdemeanor simple battery after an altercation with his girlfriend. However, Rainey's girlfriend says she was not assaulted, and that the state of Florida should drop the battery charge against him.
Rainey had 173 yards on five runbacks in Sunday's 24-20 win over the Giants before leaving with a rib injury.|||||||
It's uncertain the extent of his injury.
