Kluwe's latest campaign for a cause isn't sitting well with his position coach. Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer says Kluwe needs to "focus on punting and holding." Kluwe has been one of the most outspoken players in the NFL, taking up very public fights for gay marriage and against drunken driving this season. Priefer says "it's getting old."|||||||
On Sunday against the Bears, Kluwe put a message over the Hall of Fame patch on his jersey that read "Vote Ray Guy" for the former Raiders punter. It was an effort to raise awareness that the Hall of Fame does not have a punter enshrined, and it cost Kluwe a $5,250 fine from the NFL. Priefer says wants Kluwe to concentrate on his job.
Kluwe says he's had enough with these replacement officials after watching them for three weeks of preseason games in a series of tweets following a 12-10 loss to San Diego on Friday.|||||||
Referee Wayne Elliott's crew called 20 penalties in the game, including 14 against the Chargers. They had two calls overturned on review and several others that had players and coaches shaking their heads after the plays.
The Vikings signed Kluwe to a six-year contract extension today, locking him up through 2013, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.|||||||
Kluwe ranks 14th in the NFL with an average of 44.2 yards per punt and leads the league with 18 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Kluwe will have reconstructive surgery later this month to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The Vikings' rookie punter finished sixth in the NFL and second in the NFC with a 44.1-yard gross average this season. He injured the knee against the Detroit Lions on Dec. 4 and played through pain for the final three weeks of the season.|||||||
According to Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice, Kluwe will be forced to miss Sunday's matchup with the St. Louis Rams after spraining his ankle in last weekend's win over the Detroit Lions. The team will audition temporary replacements this week.|||||||
Kicker Paul Edinger handled the team's punts following Kluwe's departure on Sunday, but the Vikings don't want to go that route again this week. In 12 games this season, Kluwe is averaging 45.3 yards on 58 boots.
