Kemoeatu's contract is worth $20 million over five seasons and pays him a signing bonus of nearly $4 million, which is believed to be less than the Jets were offering. The Steelers released former starting right guard Kendall Simmons on Thursday. Losing Kemoeatu - who helped them win a Super Bowl in his first season as a starter - would have left them with former undrafted free agent Darnell Stapleton as their only experienced guard.

Kemoeatu has played in 18 career games at guard and on special teams and made two starts at right guard in 2006. A fifth-round draft pick in 2005, he will make $1,417,000.
The Steelers have made a one-year contract offer to Kemoeatu, reportedly for more than $1.4 million. With the offers, the Steelers reserve the right to retain Kemoeatu by matching any offers from other teams during the free-agent signing period, which starts Friday.|||||||
