The Steelers made a surprise move in activating nose tackle Casey Hampton from the physically unable to perform list.||||||| Hampton's left knee ligament was torn in the Jan. 8 playoff loss at Denver. Hampton has come back from a torn ACL twice before. In 1997 while at the University of Texas, he also injured his left knee. Seven years later with the Steelers, Hampton tore his ACL in a Week 6 game at Dallas, ending his season.

Hampton left practice Sunday with a knee injury, although coach Mike Tomlin said the four-time Pro Bowl player is expected to be fine.||||||| Hampton, who missed three games last season with a groin injury, is considered the key to the Steelers' league-leading rushing defense.

Hampton, the four-time Pro Bowl nose tackle, remained on the sidelines Monday as the Pittsburgh Steelers began their second week of training camp. Hampton isn't hurting and there's no contractual issue, but coach Mike Tomlin still isn't ready to let him onto the practice field.||||||| During a time when NFL linemen who don't weigh at least 300 pounds are becoming scarce, and being in the 350-pound range isn't uncommon, Hampton is being punished by the Steelers for what now is a seldom-seen violation: weighing too much. Hampton reported to camp on July 27 far above the weight preferred by Tomlin and, until Hampton gets into better shape, he won't practice.

Hampton was declared inactive for the Steelers' game on Sunday because of an injured hamstring.||||||| Chris Hoke is expected to start.
