The Chicago Bears are parting ways with Urlacher after 13 years. General manager Phil Emery said Wednesday that the team couldn't agree on a contract with Urlacher, for years the heart and face of the franchise. He is now a free agent after missing the last four games of the season with a hamstring injury.||||||| The eight-time Pro Bowler started 180 games from 2000 through 2012, recording a team-record 1,779 tackles. The ninth overall selection in the 2000 draft has 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles. He was the AP's defensive player of the year in 2005.

Chicago is without Urlacher for its must-win game at Detroit on Sunday.||||||| The Bears need a victory and a Minnesota loss to make the playoffs, but Urlacher is inactive with a hamstring injury. He hasn't played since Dec. 2.

Urlacher was fined $21,000 by the NFL for a horse-collar tackle on Seattle's Leon Washington, his second fine in two weeks.||||||| Urlacher, penalized for the tackle in the Bears' 23-17 loss last Sunday, also was fined last week for a horse-collar tackle of Minnesota's Adrian Peterson.

Urlacher hasn't practiced since he injured his hamstring against Seattle on Dec. 2.||||||| Coach Lovie Smith is "hopeful" the starting middle linebacker will return this week but wouldn't commit to it. "Brian is a quick healer, and if he's ready to go, he will," he said. "He's made a lot of progress. I'm not trying to run away from the question. We have to get to the practice week and see where he is."
