Grimes, who missed almost all of last season with an Achilles tendon injury, has signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins.|||||||
Grimes started 28 games for the Atlanta Falcons in 2010-11 but was hurt in the opener last year. He was undrafted and broke into the NFL with the Falcons in 2007. Grimes, who has 13 career interceptions, will compete for a starting job with the Dolphins. They lost Sean Smith via free agency to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Grimes went out in the fourth quarter of Atlanta's 40-24 win at Kansas City in the season opener. Coach Mike Smith announced Monday the cornerback will need surgery, costing Atlanta one of its best defensive backs. Grimes was a Pro Bowler in the 2010 season and got the franchise tag this past offseason when he couldn't agree on a new contract, receiving a salary of $10.2 million.
The Atlanta Falcons on Friday placed the franchise tag on Grimes, assuring he will receive more than $10 million if he signs the tender.|||||||
Grimes, who led the team with 17 passes defensed in 2011, is one of the most important names in an unusually large class of 17 unrestricted free agents. He had a combined 11 interceptions in 2009 and 2010 and was an alternate Pro Bowl pick in 2010. Grimes' agent, Ben Dogra, said the decision by Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff was expected.
