The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Brandon Johnson.|||||||
The 29-year-old Johnson spent the last four seasons in Cincinnati, where he played 58 games - including 12 starts - recording a career-high 79 tackles in 2008. Johnson was originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2006 draft. Johnson gives the Steelers needed veteran depth at linebacker. Pittsburgh's other three top reserves - Stephenson Sylvester, Jason Worilds and rookie Sean Spence - have started a combined eight NFL games.

The fourth-year player from Louisville finished second on the team in tackles last season, getting a chance to start after rookie linebacker Keith Rivers broke his jaw. Johnson was a fifth-round pick by Arizona and played on special teams for two years. The Bengals signed him as a free agent, and he got his chance to play after Rivers got hurt. The Bengals tendered him a contract in February, giving them the right to match any offer from another team.

Johnson was a fifth-round draft choice out of Louisville in 2006. The 6-foot-5, 224-pounder played in nine games in two seasons for Arizona. In six games last season, he had six tackles on special teams.
Johnson agreed to terms with the Cardinals on Wednesday. Arizona's fifth round pick in the draft, Johnson, an outside linebacker, led Louisville with 72 tackles last season. He also had two sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Johnson finished his career with six blocked kicks and tied for the national lead with four as a freshman in 2002.|||||||
