The Patriots have re-signed Carpenter.||||||| The Patriots had released Carpenter on the final cut of training camp on Sept. 1 after signing him as a free agent following two seasons with the Detroit Lions. He entered the NFL as the 18th pick in the 2006 draft by the Dallas Cowboys, spending four years with them. He started the 20120 season with the Miami Dolphins before moving to Detroit. Carpenter has started 10 of his 89 pro games.

He joined the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent April 5, and has played in 89 NFL games.

The Cowboys and Rams have swapped underachieving former first-round picks Monday, with offensive tackle Alex Barron going to Dallas and linebacker Bobby Carpenter headed for St. Louis.||||||| Carpenter made only two starts in four seasons for the Cowboys, one in the regular season and one in the playoffs, and was a backup inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense last season. The Rams have a 4-3 defense and the 250-pound Carpenter could start.

Carpenter has a slightly torn quadriceps muscle, according to the Dallas Morning News.||||||| Carpenter has been told to six out four to six weeks, but he wants to push through the injury. Carpenter, the 2006 first-round pick, leads Dallas in special teams tackles, but is used sparingly on defense. Coach Wade Phillips said he expects Carpenter to play.

The Cowboys agreed to a five-year, $12 million deal with first-round pick Bobby Carpenter on Friday and were expecting to have it signed in time for the first workout Saturday.||||||| Carpenter, a linebacker from Ohio State taken 18th overall, will receive about $7.5 million guaranteed. The only holdup was finalizing some wording. He's already in camp.
