The Patriots had released Carpenter on the final cut of training camp on Sept. 1 after signing him as a free agent following two seasons with the Detroit Lions. He entered the NFL as the 18th pick in the 2006 draft by the Dallas Cowboys, spending four years with them. He started the 20120 season with the Miami Dolphins before moving to Detroit. Carpenter has started 10 of his 89 pro games.

Carpenter, 29, a former Ohio State standout, is a veteran of six seasons with Dallas, Miami and Detroit. He joined the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent April 5, and has played in 89 NFL games.
