A person familiar with the negotiations says Cofield has agreed to a 6-year, $36 million deal with the Washington Redskins. In the deal $12.5 million is guaranteed, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because free agent contracts can't be signed until Friday.|||||||
Cofield has been a steady presence up front for the New York Giants for five seasons, although he'll have to make the transition to nose tackle in the Redskins' 3-4 defense. Cofield essentially replaces Albert Haynesworth, whom the Redskins are expected to cut or trade.
Playing on the Giants' star-studded defensive line, Cofield could easily get lost in the crowd. While Cofield has made his share of plays in helping the Giants take over the NFL's No. 1 ranking on defense, he is also the guy in the middle of the line who allows the other guys to excel.|||||||
Cofield has two sacks and has come up with a unique "Don't tase me, bro" dance. The former Northwestern star holds his fist in the air and then holds it against his side and twitches as if the volts were pulsing through his body. Teammate Justin Tuck loves the move, as well as what Cofield is doing on the field.

Cofield said he understands the NFL is a business. General manager Jerry Reese has assured Cofield he is not on the trading block, it's just that the Saints made a great offer, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. "To me, there's a difference between being on the trading block and accepting an offer they felt like they couldn't refuse," Cofield told the newspaper. "I was told I wasn't being shopped around and that I was still going to be the guy here."
