Minnesota Vikings cornerback Asher Allen has retired from football. Coach Leslie Frazier announced on Wednesday that the fourth-year cornerback came into his office last week and told Frazier of his decision. Frazier says he was surprised, but did not get into the specifics of their discussion.||||||| Allen started nine games and appeared in 12 last year, but missed some time due to a concussion and a shoulder injury. Frazier says the decision was not related to injuries. Allen was a third-round draft pick out of Georgia in 2009. He started 11 games in 2010, but struggled last season as part of the Vikings' banged-up secondary. He had four interceptions in his career.

Allen sufffered a concussion in Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints.||||||| Another starter, safety Husain Abdullah, was placed on injured reserve earlier this month due to lingering post-concussion symptoms.

The Vikings have signed Allen, a third-round draft pick, to a four-year contract.||||||| The cornerback was the 86th overall selection out of Georgia. He also could help the Vikings as a return man on special teams. Allen ranks third on Georgia's career list with 1,110 return yards. Allen was signed on the same day that the Vikings inked incumbent starter Antoine Winfield to a five-year deal. Allen is expected to challenge for time as the nickel back.
