The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed wide receiver Arnaz Battle and safety Will Allen, both unrestricted free agents.||||||| Battle spent seven seasons with San Francisco and played in 88 games as a receiver, kick returner and punt returner. The San Francisco 49ers put Battle on injured reserve Saturday with a sprained foot, ending his season.||||||| Battle, a six-year NFL veteran, played in just nine games this season, catching 24 passes for 318 yards while struggling with injuries. He returned to the 49ers' lineup last week against the Jets after missing four games, but aggravated his foot injury.

Battle had seven catches for 120 yards on Sunday, though the 49ers lost 31-17 to New Orleans. It was the first 100-yard game of his career, in Battle's 68th NFL game.||||||| Battle had been quiet in the first three games, and he's failed to top 700 yards in a season the last two years despite starting regularly. But he's worth keeping an eye on in Mike Martz's offense in San Francisco, even if he's not worth a spot in a fantasy lineup quite yet.

Battle broke a bone in his left hand at some point in the San Francisco 49ers' last game, yet the receiver never stopped playing. Rather than sitting out of Sunday's game against Seattle before having surgery on his hand Monday, Battle plans to play with a padded glove. He doesn't think the injury will slow his rise as the 49ers' most dependable possession receiver.||||||| Lining up opposite Antonio Bryant in the 49ers' suddenly successful offense, Battle is second on the 49ers with 30 catches for 341 yards and two touchdowns.

Battle, who had just three touchdows in his previous 36 NFL games, caught two touchdown passes in the 49ers' 34-20 victory over the winless Oakland Raiders on Sunday.||||||| Battle had just four catches total on Sunday for 37 yards, and has 15 receptions for 194 yards on the season, gaining more than 40 yards in just one game.
