The New England Patriots have released Gonzalez less than three months after signing him.||||||| Gonzalez was signed by the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent from Indianapolis in March. A first-round draft pick from Ohio State, he had 99 receptions for 1,307 yards and seven touchdowns in five seasons for the Colts despite a rash of injuries. He has been active for only 11 games since the 2008 season.

Gonzalez's season is over after he was placed on injured reserve for a second straight season with a knee injury.||||||| The team's official announcement makes a specific point of saying that Gonzalez suffered the injury "when being tackled out of bounds," making clear that the Colts think the hit delivered by Texans safety Bernard Pollard on Monday night should have drawn a penalty flag and a fine.

The Colts have put Gonzalez on injured reserve, ending his season.||||||| Gonzalez sprained ligaments in his right knee in the season opener and later had arthroscopic surgery on the knee, delaying his return. On Monday, team president Bill Polian said on his radio show that Indianapolis hoped to have Gonzalez practice this week so he could play in the final two games of the season in preparation for the playoffs. Gonzalez practiced Monday but sat out Wednesday, prompting Thursday's announcement.
