Whitworth enjoyed a stellar season with the Bengals and is replacing an injured Ryan Clady of Denver. The seventh-year lineman has started every game for the Bengals since 2009. His streak of 67 straight starts is the longest on the team.
The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to a two-year contract extension with Whitworth on Wednesday, a deal that runs through the 2015 season.|||||||
Whitworth was a second-round draft pick in 2006, when he moved into the starting lineup. He emerged as one of the league's most dependable tackles last season. He was a team captain and assumed a leadership role during the NFL lockout, helping to organize workouts in Cincinnati. Whitworth has started every game each of the last two seasons. He's the first player the Bengals have extended since the lockout ended.
Bengals coach Marvin Lewis moved Whitworth to left tackle for the start of the team's voluntary offseason workouts Tuesday. Andre Smith, the team's top draft pick, will line up at right tackle when he reaches a contract agreement. Smith has never played right tackle.|||||||
Whitworth has filled in at left tackle for Levi Jones, who has been hurt the last few years and was released in the offseason. The offensive line was the Bengals' biggest problem last season, when they won four games and finished last in the league in total offense.
