Peterson had surgery for a sports hernia on Thursday. The Vikings made the announcement on their website and say they "expect a speedy recovery with no long-term concerns." Peterson had the procedure in Philadelphia.|||||||

He sat out the fourth quarter against Houston in December, which may have kept him from breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record.

Earlier Saturday, Peterson won Offensive Player of the Year. The Minnesota Vikings running back finished with 2,019 yards, a mere 9 yards short of breaking Eric Dickerson's rushing record. Peterson beat out Peyton Manning, who in his first season as Denver's quarterback contended for a fifth MVP trophy. Manning's four are a record. Peterson received 30 1-2 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. Manning got the other 19 1-2 votes.

Peterson said Monday as the Vikings cleared out their lockers that he wants to get as many teammates as he can to join him for his workouts. The Vikings lost in Green Bay to the Packers in the NFC playoffs on Saturday to finish 10-7, a seven-win improvement from last year. Peterson said he'll take some time to rest his body, but not much. He said his rehabilitation program showed him the benefit of starting preseason training early.
Peterson was held to 99 yards in Saturday's playoff loss - an improvement after gaining 199 and 210 in the first two games against Green Bay.|||||||
