5 important Bears quotes from the first days of training camp Did you miss what these Bears had to say? By JOHN SAHLYJuly 24, 2018 We're a few days into Chicago Bears training camp, and there's been plenty of news already out of Bourbonnais. Matt Nagy on Jordan Howard: "There’s this fašade out there, there’s this notion that he is just a first- and second-down back, and I don’t believe that. Jordan can play all three downs. We’re gonna do that. We’re gonna use him. And we’re gonna use other guys on first and second down when we need to.” What it means: The demise of Howard in Nagy’s offense when Nagy was first hired may have been greatly exaggerated. Taylor Gabriel on catching a Mitch Trubisky pass for a touchdown: “That's a ball that's kind of scary to throw because it was (against) Cover-2. But for him to trust me on that deep ball and trust my speed, that's what I like to see.” What it means: A good sign if the new Bears WR and QB are already on the same page. Tarik Cohen: “I felt like last year I was scrambling out there. For [a] rookie season in the NFL, your mind’s going to be scrambling, but now it’s slowed down a little bit, I’m more comfortable in the offense, I know what to look at. I don’t have to look at the whole picture, I can just look at where my eyes need to be. I feel like my eyes are more trained now.” What it means: Cohen has had a busy camp workload so far, but look for Cohen to carve out his role in this offense. Eddie Jackson on this year’s defense: “The chemistry we have with each other from last year, everyone is ready to come in and get after it. That’s just the mindset on defense, that we’re going to be the No. 1 defense in the NFL this year.” What it means: Big confidence from the second-year safety. Can the defense back it up? Matt Nagy: “(Running backs) coach (Charles) London got a little competition going on there,” head coach Matt Nagy said. “I think that's good for the guys, and I'm just a little upset that I didn’t see (defensive coordinator) Vic (Fangio) doing his 10 pushups.” What it means: A good sense of humor from the new head coach! On the final rep of a one-on-one, pass-rush drill that featured running backs blocking linebackers, RB Jordan Howard stopped ILB Nick Kwiatkoski in his tracks, and the punishment was 10 pushups for all the linebackers.
