This is still a long way from what I expect my mock to look like by the time we get a couple days from Round One, but having had a chance to visit with a number of teams now and with some pro days in the books, draft boards are starting to get a lot more "educated.”
I still think it is absurd that any of these quarterbacks will go in the top five, and it’s really hard for me to justify any of them but Darnold or Mayfield going top 10, but it's becoming pretty clear at least two — and possibly three — will go in the top five.
Three running backs in the top 16 feels a bit rich to me as well, but there are multiple teams with big needs at the position, and the recent successes of Todd Gurley and Leonard Fournette could be debunking the theory you can wait to the middle rounds for the great ones — although Jordan Howard, Alvin Kamara and Kareem Hunt might argue that point.
I’d be surprised if there is only one cornerback, three safeties and just two wideouts in the first round this year, but right now that’s how the “Best Available Player” board is stacking up.
Enjoy this one, and I’ll update it for you again in about 10 days.
