But short of landing Cousins or another big-name veteran, the Broncos very much could be in the quarterback draft market — and perhaps in Round 1, if the right player is there. This year’s class will be interesting to monitor over the next month as we approach the deadline for underclassmen to declare. The QB crop figures to be heavy on non-seniors, with Heisman Trophy Award winner Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma one of the higher-ranked exceptions who could land in the upper part of the draft.
The Broncos currently would be picking No. 5 overall if the season ended today, and barring a late flurry of victories, it’s looking as if they’ll be in the top 10. Is Elway eyeing someone in particular already? Would Elway be hesitant, given his Lynch experience, to trade up for the right prospect? These are interesting questions to ponder now, as they could affect how the Broncos approach free agency in the six-plus weeks prior to the draft.
But we’ve been led to believe that drafting a quarterback high certainly is one intriguing possibility the Broncos aren’t likely to eliminate anytime soon.
